Up Close: Life at Banner & Witcoff

Summer Associate
  • "My first summer I came in not really knowing anything about patent law. My mentor took several hours to give me a crash course on the basics of patent law and patent prosecution to help get me up to speed. My first project was a response to an Office Action. It took a long time, but I eventually got through it." (1L)

"I asked the other firms about softball, and it wasn't a priority ... Unacceptable."

  • "A highlight was playing a witness in a mock trial held at the ABA Intellectual Property Law conference held in Seattle. A B&W attorney and I helped put together a fact pattern for a mock trial. Because I helped draft the fact pattern and also was well-versed in Internet technologies, I was selected to play the witness. At the conference, four well-known attorneys grilled me on the witness stand for about 1 hour in front of around 300 attorneys and a mock jury. " (1L)

It was a great experience." (2L)

  • "Attorneys at Banner & Witcoff want summer associates to explore a range of real-work experiences. The opportunities abound. I drafted and helped file a patent application, and later helped draft a complaint and motion for preliminary injunction in a trade dress case. At the end of the summer I participated in the four day hearing on our preliminary injunction motion in federal court. By the end of the summer I really knew what IP law was about and what it would be like to work as an attorney at B&W."(2L)

"I got more experience than I ever expected out of my summer experience at Banner." (1L)

  • "The thing that stands out was the remarkable quality of people working at Banner & Witcoff. ... There was a good balance of help while still giving me challenging work. The standout positive was the drive for excellence while still being fun to work with, I found this quality in everyone I worked with and I am looking foward to spending many years in this environment." (2L)

  • "I truly valued the opportunity I had to work with so many attorneys in so many different areas of IP law (patent prosecution & litigation, trademark opinions & litigation)." (1L)

Associate
  • "I knew after the first summer that I wanted to stay on as an attorney. The second summer reconfirmed that belief. The reason I knew was that I had always heard that working at a law firm was not very fun, and that people were not very nice. I had the opposite experience at Banner. I worked hard, but the work was interesting and made me feel as though I were part of a team."(First Year Associate)

  • "Banner & Witcoff has broken the mold... We have exceptional clients with interesting and challenging work. Our attorneys share a commitment to mentoring younger lawyers in a truly collegial environment. In short, working here is fun." (Third Year Associate)

Partner
  • "When I joined the firm 25 years ago, I joined because the firm was an oasis of right-mindedness about professionalism, camaraderie, attention to advancing the careers of associates, and balance between high professional achievement and personal life. I actually said to friends outside the firm at the end of my first day that firm lawyers and staff must have thought I was somebody else, they'd treated me so well. All these years and changes later, we are still an oasis. We achieve great things, in a firm of tradition and pride, and we achieve them fairly, professionally, having fun doing what we do, and making sure newer lawyers get as many opportunities as we did. Personally, I love getting young lawyers their first witnesses in jury trials. One recently presented our inventor, and did a great job, one he'll always remember. No one around here ever fairly said they were lacking in client contact, opportunity for responsibility, their own time at the podium, or respect for their opinion. "
