Sarah A. Kagan
Attorney
Dr. Sarah Kagan works with firm clients to obtain patent protection in the biotechnology field. Dr. Kagan has developed an extensive patent portfolio on cancer genetics, for a major university medical school. The portfolio generates income for the school in the form of licensing fees and research funds. In addition, corporate licensees have invested further in research and development of the inventions in the portfolio. Dr. Kagan enjoys a diverse client population, including individual inventors, academic institutions, non-profit foundations, start-up biotechnology companies, established biotechnology companies, and pharmaceutical companies.

Dr. Kagan has spent an increasing portion of her time in interferences. These two-party contests determine which of competing applicants made his/her invention first. Such contests are common in biotechnology patent practice. She earned a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Wisconsin in 1981 working in the area of antibiotic resistance determinants in bacteria. Dr. Kagan did post-doctoral research on nitrogen fixing bacteria in England. She then apprenticed as a law clerk for the firm, while attending law school at night.

Dr. Kagan practices in the Washington, DC office of Banner & Witcoff, Ltd.
