Peter McDermott works with technology-based businesses to obtain and enforce patents and other intellectual property rights, both domestically and internationally. Mr. McDermott's practice focuses on corporate management's coordinated procurement, licensing and litigation of intellectual property rights, in support of competitive market position, including strategic reexamination and reissue of patents before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. His broad licensing experience includes preparing and successfully negotiating patent licenses and other technology transfer agreements covering technologies such as medical devices, polymer coatings, glass fabrication, automotive components, fiber optics and plastic moldings. Mr. McDermott has handled licensing and due diligence studies in support of acquisitions, divestitures and corporate joint ventures of U.S., European and Asian corporations.Mr. McDermott's experience includes serving as in-house counsel at Ford Motor Company. He earned his J.D., with honors, from Suffolk University Law School in 1978. He earned his B.S. in Chemical Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute where he has served as an Executive Board member and Chair of the WPI Venture Forum, a non-profit program supporting pre-start up and early stage technology-based businesses. Mr. McDermott is a member of several state and federal district and appellate court bars, including Massachusetts and Michigan. He serves as a core member of the faculty for the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation's Global Scholars Program. Through this program, Mr. McDermott teaches American intellectual property law to young entrepreneurs selected from European engineering, science, and technology scholars. Mr. McDermott also serves in the appointed position of Chair of the Lawyer Referral Service of the Massachusetts Bar Association and as a member of the Association’s Budget and Finance Committee. He is also a member of the Intellectual Property Owners Association, where he serves as a member of the IP Licensing Committee.
