UP CLOSE: LIFE AT B&W
PORTLAND, OR

Portland serves as the center of Oregon's culture and education, as well as the hub of commerce. Most of the state's major cultural institutions call Portland home, including the opera, symphony, and many outstanding museums. Portland offers the best of both worlds - the friendly personality of a small community and the activities and interest of a large city. Set against the backdrop of majestic Mount Hood, and divided by the Willamette River, the region offers year round activities. One can enjoy over 300 acres of outdoor scenery in Washington Park, home to the Hoyt Arboretum, the International Rose Test Garden, the Japanese Garden, and the Oregon Zoo. View pieces of art in the Portland Art Museum, or buy hand-crafted ones at the Portland Saturday Market. You can also visit the Hawthorne District and experience some of the many bookstores, delis, antique stores, ethnic restaurants and coffee shops the city has to offer. Portland is a very livable city with a mild climate; spring comes early and fall comes late, and the gentle rains keep the area clean and lush. Taking in the scenery is easy and delightful; light rails move commuters and visitors throughout the town. Years of careful urban management have made Portland a city planner's dream.
